THERE IS NO FIXED TIME FOR THIS ONLINE APPOINTMENT BUT IT SHOULD TAKE PLACE THE WEEK AFTER THIS BOOKING DATE.

On the day of this booking, you will be contacted via your university email and paired with a writing mentor. You will then set up a 45-minute appointment with your mentor at a mutually convenient time in the week after the booking. Please ensure that you check your university emails regularly. You will need to plan ahead and give time to arrange a meeting before assignment deadlines. You will not recieve an appointment on the booking date.

What is the Academic Writing Zone (AWZ)? The Academic Writing Zone is a space where any student in LUMS can discuss academic writing issues with a trained student writing mentor. It is not a class or course; it is one-to-one provision. This appointment takes place online and is for students who are studying remotely. If you are on campus or in Lancaster, please book one of our on campus appointments.

What happens at a one-to-one? Our mentors are trained to help you develop effective strategies for approaching and managing the writing demands of your course. The mentors can help talk through such matters as; how to get started on your assignment, approaching different types of assignments, aspects of structure and style, referencing, and the clarity of your writing. They do not help you with subject content, and they do not proofread your work.

If you would like more information about the LUMS Academic Writing Zone, please watch this video.

What do I need to do for my appointment? Before your appointment, think through what you would like to get out of the meeting with the writing mentor. This may require bringing a copy of the task, a plan or draft.

Practicalities

  • If you can’t attend your appointment, you must cancel the appointment via this booking system or by emailing learningdevelopmentlums@lancaster.ac.uk If you do cancel, please leave adequate notice – if you cancel an hour before your booking, this does not leave time for another student to travel onto campus. Please do not book a place if you do not intend to attend.
  • When busy, bookings are limited to one per week per student. However, you may join more than one waiting list if places are fully booked.
  • We ask you to arrive promptly for your appointment and do not be late.
  • If you have any questions or problems booking, please email: learningdevelopmentlums@lancaster.ac.uk

We look forward to seeing you in the Academic Writing Zone!
