This session will give you the opportunity to find out more about the library's new SafePod and Research Engagement spaces.

SafePod

A SafePod is a standardised safe setting that provides the necessary security for a researcher to access sensitive datasets from participating Data Centres across the UK. The SafePod at Lancaster University is part of the SafePod Network (SPN). A total of 25 SafePods will make up the SafePod Network, spread geographically across the UK. This network will remove the need for long-distance travel to a dedicated safe setting provided by a data centre.

A wealth of valuable large-scale data assets are available through the new facility from the following organisations:

  • Office for National Statistics (ONS)
  • UK Data Service
  • SAIL Databank
  • Scottish Government.

Lancaster’s SafePod is part of a UK-wide network funded by the ESRC which aims to accelerate the safe use of valuable national data assets for research. Lancaster joins a network of approximately 25 Universities from across the UK, which will benefit from this initiative.

The Library Research Engagement Spaces

The Library's Research Engagement Spaces consist of the Digital Scholarship and Open Research Labs. They are flexible spaces that can facilitate a range of workshops and events, although they are not intended to be teaching spaces. The Library is looking to partner with its diverse research community to promote interdisciplinary Open Research and Digital Scholarship throughout the institution and beyond.
