Countering the Invisibility of Race in our Digital and Environmental Future
Event box
This session is centred on themes of systemic racism in the UK and considers how we can meaningfully capture 'lived experience', and better design research to counter racial inequity and exclusion in our digital and environmental futures. Part of this session will reflect on qualitative data from the PRIME project. The EPSRC funded PRIME project was developed to focus on the everyday digital experiences of racialised communities in England and Scotland, with a particular focus on health, housing and energy services, led by an interdisciplinary team of social science and computer science researchers. Part of this session will also discuss a video game developed by a collaborative team led by Mark Wong. The video game ‘SEvEN - Seven Voices, One Future’ is publicly available and free to play online (on any web browser on a Mac/Windows PC), and invites people to reflect on what a sustainable future truly means and for whom. The purpose of the game is to amplify the voices of Minoritised Ethnic people and the role of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in thinking about Scotland’s sustainable future. SEvEN was nominated for the "Spirit of Scotland" award at the Scottish Games Awards 2023, one of the most prestigious awards in the Scottish games industry.
