ECOWild Field Trip: Ribble Rivers Trust
Event box
Join the Green Lancaster team on an ECOWild practical field trip with the Ribble Rivers Trust! Open to staff and students at Lancaster University with transport provided.
-----------
In 2016, the trust introduced a riparian habitat woodland scheme in 2016 but since then, the river has been steadily eroding parts of the bank and undermining the fence in places. On the Field Trip, we will be supporting the Trust in erecting brash bundles and using live willow staking to reduce erosion and enhance biodiversity on the Ribble River.
Brash bundling is a river conservation technique that utilises natural materials to protect and stabilise riverbanks. By stablilising the riverbanks, the project creates vital habitats for fish, insecs, birds and other wildlife. Brash bundling also mitigates the risk of flooding by reducing erosion and slowing the flow of water, protecting local communities, infrastrucutre and vulnerable river habitats.
Please note this activity requires a reasonable level of fitness due to the terrain, planned activities and walking distance to the work site. Please contact the Green Lancaster team on green@lancaster.ac.uk if you have any questions related to accessibility requirements.
Full details will be circulated by e-mail to all registered volunteers during the week commencing 26th February.
Our ECOWild field trips are a real opportunity and privilege to experience the great outdoors and contribute to significant projects across the country that tackle the climate and ecological emergencies. If you have booked a place but are no longer able to attend, please cancel your ticket to enable someone else to benefit from this opportunity. These trips are popular: fully booked with people on a waiting list. We want as many of you to be able to benefit from them, please help us do so. Thank you!
