What is the Scientific Writing Centre (SWC)? The Scientific Writing Centre is a place where any Undergraduate student from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) or the Faculty of Health and Medicine (FHM) can discuss their scientific writing with a trained postgraduate scientific writing mentor. It is not a class or course; it is a one-to-one appointment. This appointment will take place on campus in C130 in the Library, at the time stated on your booking. Appointments last up to 45 minutes.

What happens at a one-to-one appointment? Our mentors are trained to help you develop effective strategies for approaching and managing the scientific writing demands of your course. The mentors can help talk through aspects such as: how to get started on your assignment, approaching different types of assignments, aspects of structure and style, referencing, and the clarity of your writing. They do not help you with subject content, and they do not proofread your work.

What do I need to do for my appointment? Before your appointment, think through what you would like to get out of the meeting with the writing mentor and what questions you would like to ask them. It is a good idea to bring something to discuss such as the instructions for your next assignment, feedback you have had on your writing, an assignment plan or a sample of your writing.

Practicalities

  • If you can’t attend your appointment, you must cancel the appointment via this booking system or by emailing scientific-writing-centre@lancaster.ac.uk. If you do cancel, please leave adequate notice – if you cancel an hour before your booking, this does not leave time for another student to travel onto campus. Please do not book a place if you do not intend to attend.

  • Students will be limited to one booking per week, to help manage demand. Please also note that you may not book multiple appointments for the same piece of writing. We will be happy to support you at different ‘stages’ of your work – for example, you could come with a plan, and then return again with a draft. However, you may not book appointments for the same plan or draft, and expect multiple mentors to provide feedback on the exact same piece of work.

  • We ask you to arrive promptly for your appointment and do not be late.

  • If you have any questions or problems booking, please email: scientific-writing-centre@lancaster.ac.uk

We look forward to seeing you at the Scientific Writing Centre!
