In celebration of Black History Month 2024, join us for an event led by award-winning Yorùbá-Nigerian writer, poet, and lecturer Abíọ́dún Ọlátòkunbọ̀ Abdul. This event focuses on cultural and social themes related to the diaspora of Yorùbán, Nigerian, and African people, aiming to explore and celebrate natural afro hair and Yorùbá hairstyles through interactive learning and creative sessions.

The event will include an interactive learning session with a presentation covering a quick Nigeria quiz, the origins and significance of afro hair, a Yorùbá hair braiding styles guessing game, and a discussion on afro hair discrimination and pride, all set to the background of Nigerian Afrobeats and other African music genres. Additionally, the event will feature three 10-minute presentations from current Lancaster University PhD students on their research and how it aims to aid race equality. The final segment of the event includes a creative session where participants create poems or artworks inspired by images from the learning session, followed by presentations of their work and a distribution of Nigerian snacks.

Held in Lancaster University’s Library’s Events Space on A floor behind the living wall, participants will enjoy Nigerian finger-foods and music throughout the sessions. This event is a unique opportunity to engage with and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Yorùbá and broader African diaspora, fitting seamlessly into the Black History Month theme of reclaiming and honouring our narratives.

Catering for this event will be provided by KC's, the newest food outlet on campus, with Akara (Ve), Puff Puff and Jollof Rice (Ve)  for attendees. A list of allergens is available on request from edi@lancaster.ac.uk.
