LUMS Academic Writing Zone
Event box
What is the Academic Writing Zone (AWZ)? The Academic Writing Zone is a space where any student in LUMS can discuss academic writing issues with a trained student writing mentor. It is not a class or course; it is one-to-one provision. This appointment takes place on campus in West Pavilion (WP) B08 in the Management School building, located in the Economics department, at the time stated on your booking. Appointments are a maximum of 45 minutes.
If you are studying remotely, we also offer online appointments. Please email learningdevelopmentlums@lancaster.ac.uk to request one. These are prioritised for students unable to attend on campus.
What happens at a one-to-one? Our mentors are trained to help you develop effective strategies for approaching and managing the writing demands of your course. The mentors can help talk through such matters as; how to get started on your assignment, approaching different types of assignments, aspects of structure and style, referencing, and the clarity of your writing. They do not help you with subject content, and they do not proofread your work.
If you would like more information about the LUMS Academic Writing Zone, please watch this video.
What do I need to do for my appointment? Before your appointment, think through what you would like to get out of the meeting with the writing mentor. This may require bringing a copy of the task, a plan or draft. You can print this out or bring it on a device.
Practicalities
- If you can’t attend your appointment, you must cancel the appointment via this booking system or by emailing learningdevelopmentlums@lancaster.ac.uk If you do cancel, please leave adequate notice – if you cancel an hour before your booking, this does not leave time for another student to travel onto campus. Please only book a place if you intend to attend.
-
Students will be limited to one booking per week, to help manage demand. Please do not book multiple appointments for the same piece of writing. We will be happy to support you at different ‘stages’ of your work – for example, you could come with a plan, and then return later with a draft. However, you may not book appointments for the same plan or draft, and expect multiple mentors to provide feedback on the same piece of work.
- We ask you to arrive promptly for your appointment.
- If you have any questions, problems booking or cannot find a space, please email: learningdevelopmentlums@lancaster.ac.uk
We look forward to seeing you in the Academic Writing Zone!
