Dr Selina Patel Nascimento: Mothering Slaves: Black Women’s Intimacies in Nineteenth-Century Brazil

This talk traces the intimate lives of two enslaved mothers and explores how their family ties were shaped by, and in spite of, systematic racial slavery and violence.

Stephen Poleon (Doctoral student): Cricket and the development of Preston’s Caribbean community

Cricket is central to the development of Caribbean communities across Britain.  This presentation will explore the development of the Caribbean community in Preston through the lens of Jalgos West Indian CC.

Dr Chris Donaldson: Tracing Black lives in the archives

The study of Black history in Britain has gained pace and visibility over the past decade. This short talk introduces some of the key sorts of archival sources for examining Black history in Britain. Complementing the work of Lancaster’s Regional Heritage Centre, the talk will focus on archival sources relating to the Black population of North West England during the 1700s and 1800s.
