Richmond and Brittany in the Middle Ages: An Enduring Connection
Event box
The Norman Conquest saw sweeping changes to society across England. Richmond stands out as the centre of an extensive territory that was placed under the control of Breton lords. This connection endured from the 1070s until 1399, and it catalysed much contact and communication between northern England and Brittany. Find out what new research is revealing about this enduring connection, and how it influenced literature and language in addition to major medieval events. This is a free lecture aimed at adults interested in history and the region, and refreshments will be available. The lecture will take place in the Richmond Room, at The Station, Richmond, North Yorkshire (see https://thestation.co.uk/visit for information about the venue and parking). The project is funded by the British Academy’s mid-career fellowship programme.
