Location: Library Exhibitions and Event Space
Details about the Exhibition:
Escape to safety is an interactive multimedia installation that enables you to experience something of what it is like to be a refugee seeking asylum in Britain. It is designed for young people and adults from the age of 11 upwards. It provides the opportunity to think about issues such as:
- What is the welcome we want to give to refugees?
- What is your image of asylum seekers in Britain?
- Where does this image come from?
You will follow in the footsteps of three refugees who came to Lancaster, one from Eritrea, one from Iran, and one from Sudan, all of whom have shared and recorded their own stories, over a haunting soundtrack of music by local musician Adrian Hughes.
Escape to Safety offers a compelling, immersive way to challenge racism towards refugees, blending personal experiences with factual information. It is built on the belief that learning through experience is a powerful and lasting way to understand what others have gone through.
If you would like to volunteer with the running of the exhibition from Thursday 8th May to Thursday 15th May, please get in touch on the email below. As a volunteer, you would primarily be in the library supporting the exhibition experience for around 3 hours (negotiable). We will provide some basic training.
If you would like to help with this, please contact Louise Speakman on facultylibrarians@lancaster.ac.uk
Brought to you by Global Link, LU Sanctuary Network, LU Library, LU STAR Student Society, FASS Decolonisation and contributing to Lancaster University’s work towards University of Sanctuary status funded by Widening Participation.
Launch on Wed 7 May but exhibition is in the library from 7 to 15 May 2025
