What is the Academic Writing Zone (AWZ)?

The Academic Writing Zone is a space where any student in LUMS can discuss academic writing issues with a trained postgraduate student writing mentor. It is not a class or course; it is one-to-one provision.

In week 4 of the Christmas vacation (7th January), we are running a small number of online Academic Writing Zone spaces. Once you have booked, we will send through a meeting link with your mentor.

Appointments are a maximum of 45 minutes.

Further information

What happens at a one-to-one? Our mentors are trained to help you develop effective strategies for approaching and managing the writing demands of your course. The mentors can help talk through such matters as; how to get started on your assignment, approaching different types of assignments, aspects of structure and style, referencing, and the clarity of your writing. They do not help you with subject content, and they do not proofread your work.

If you would like more information about the LUMS Academic Writing Zone, please watch this video.

What do I need to do for my appointment? Before your appointment, think through what you would like to get out of the meeting with the writing mentor. This may require bringing a copy of the task, a plan or draft.

For questions, problems booking or cannot find a space, please email: learningdevelopmentlums@lancaster.ac.uk

We look forward to seeing you in the Academic Writing Zone!
