Event box
Exhibition, in the Special Collections Exhibitions area (near the Safe Pod) in the Library, showcasing a timeline of The Great Strike of 1926.
The 1926 General Strike was a nine-day nationwide walkout between the 4th-12 May 1926. The Strike was called out by the General Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in an attempt to force the government to prevent wage reductions and worsening conditions for people working in the coal mining industry. The Strike involved 1.7 million workers across various sectors of industry.
The display, including materials from our Socialist Pamphlets Collection, also depicts the Contagion effects as well as the cultural effects of the Great Strike on the people in the UK at the time. It has been curated by an MA History student, Jack Marsh, as part of his work experience placement with Special Collections and Archives in Lancaster University Library in the Lent Term.
The exhibition will be in place to the end of the Summer term.
